Sun protected facade (072)
Pich Aguilera studio is one of the non-conservative teams that always attract our attention, due to the overall formalization of their buildings and the technological strategies they adopt.
Besides amazing proposals like the cantilevered structure, in the Leitat building the architects explore the possibilities of the ventilated façade. We would not call this a rainscreen as the inner layer is already water and airtight. So, even though this ceramic outer layer and the cavity behind it obviously help to prevent water entry, this is not their main function. Not having to satisfy the waterproof function permits much more freedom of design: the joint dimension or even the discontinuity of the outer screen are not binding parameters, even the cavity does not need to be uninterrupted.
